Ch. 1 ¹ Now it came to pass, after Saul was dead, that David returned from the slaughter of the Amalecites, and abode two days in Siceleg.
Ch. 2 ¹ And after these things David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I go up into one of the cities of Juda? And the Lord said to him: Go up. And David said: Whither shall I go up? And he answered him: Into Hebron.
Ch. 3 ¹ Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: David prospering and growing always stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul decaying daily.
Ch. 4 ¹ And Isboseth the son of Saul heard that Abner was slain in Hebron: and his hands were weakened, and all Israel was troubled.
Ch. 5 ¹ Then all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron, saying: Behold we are thy bone and thy flesh.
Ch. 6 ¹ And David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.
Ch. 7 ¹ And it came to pass when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,
Ch. 8 ¹ And it came to pass after this that David defeated the Philistines, and brought them down, and David took the bridle of tribute out of the hand of the Philistines,
Ch. 9 ¹ And David said: Is there any one, think you, left of the house of Saul, that I may shew kindness to him for Jonathan's sake?
Ch. 10 ¹ And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.
Ch. 11 ¹ And it came to pass at the return of the year, at the time when kings go forth to war, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel, and they spoiled the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabba: but David remained in Jerusalem.
Ch. 12 ¹ And the Lord sent Nathan to David: and when he was come to him, he said to him: There were two men in one city, the one rich, and the other poor.
Ch. 13 ¹ And it came to pass after this that Ammon the son of David loved the sister of Absalom the son of David, who was very beautiful, and her name was Thamar.
Ch. 14 ¹ And Joab the son of Sarvia, understanding that the king's heart was turned to Absalom,
Ch. 15 ¹ Now after these things Absalom made himself chariots, and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
Ch. 16 ¹ And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold Siba the servant of Miphiboseth came to meet him with two asses, laden with two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred bunches of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs, and a vessel of wine.
Ch. 17 ¹ And Achitophel said to Absalom: I will choose me twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night.
Ch. 18 ¹ And David, having reviewed his people, appointed over them captains of thousands and of hundreds,
Ch. 19 ¹ And it was told Joab, that the king wept and mourned for his son:
Ch. 20 ¹ And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Seba, the son of Bochri, a man of Jemini: and he sounded the trumpet, and said: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai: return to thy dwellings, O Israel.
Ch. 21 ¹ And there was a famine in the days of David for three years successively: and David consulted the oracle of the Lord. And the Lord said: It is for Saul, and his bloody house, because he slew the Gabaonites.
Ch. 22 ¹ And David spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul,
Ch. 23 ¹ Now these are David's last words. David the son of Isai said: The man to whom it was appointed concerning the Christ of the God of Jacob, the excellent psalmist of Israel said:
Ch. 24 ¹ And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.
