Ch. 1 ¹ The words of Jeremias the son of Helcias, of the priests that were in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin.
Ch. 2 ¹ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Ch. 3 ¹ It is commonly said: If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and marry another man, shall he return to her any more? shall not that woman be polluted, and defiled? but thou hast prostituted thyself to many lovers: nevertheless return to me, saith the Lord, and I will receive thee.
Ch. 4 ¹ If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the Lord, return to me: if thou wilt take away thy stumblingblocks out of my sight, thou shalt not be moved.
Ch. 5 ¹ Go about through the streets of Jerusalem, and see, and consider, and seek in the broad places thereof, if you can find a man that executeth judgment, and seeketh faith: and I will be merciful unto it.
Ch. 6 ¹ Strengthen yourselves, ye sons of Benjamin, in the midst of Jerusalem, and sound the trumpet in Thecua, and set up the standard over Bethacarem: for evil is seen out of the north, and a great destruction.
Ch. 7 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:
Ch. 8 ¹ At that time, saith the Lord, they shall cast out the bones of the kings of Juda, and the bones of the princes thereof, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves.
Ch. 9 ¹ Who will give water to my head, and a fountain of tears to my eyes? and I will weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people.
Ch. 10 ¹ Hear ye the word which the Lord hath spoken concerning you, O house of Israel.
Ch. 11 ¹ The word that came from the Lord to Jeremias, saying:
Ch. 12 ¹ Thou indeed, O Lord, art just, if I plead with thee, but yet I will speak what is just to thee: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper: why is it well with all them that transgress, and do wickedly?
Ch. 13 ¹ Thus saith the Lord to me: Go, and get thee a linen girdle, and thou shalt put it about thy loins, and shalt not put it into water.
Ch. 14 ¹ The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias concerning the words of the drought.
Ch. 15 ¹ And the Lord said to me: If Moses and Samuel shall stand before me, my soul is not towards this people: cast them out from my sight, and let them go forth.
Ch. 16 ¹ And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Ch. 17 ¹ The sin of Juda is written with a pen of iron, with the point of a diamond, it is graven upon the table of their heart, upon the horns of their altars.
Ch. 18 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:
Ch. 19 ¹ Thus saith the Lord: Go, and take a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests:
Ch. 20 ¹ Now Phassur the son of Emmer, the priest, who was appointed chief in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremias prophesying these words.
Ch. 21 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, when king Sedecias sent unto him Phassur, the son of Melchias, and Sophonias, the son of Maasias the priest, saying:
Ch. 22 ¹ Thus saith the Lord: Go down to the house of the king of Juda, and there thou shalt speak this word,
Ch. 23 ¹ Woe to the pastors, that destroy and tear the sheep of my pasture, saith the Lord.
Ch. 24 ¹ The Lord shewed me: and behold two baskets full of figs, set before the temple of the Lord: after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias the son of Joakim the king of Juda, and his chief men, and the craftsmen, and engravers of Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
Ch. 25 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias concerning all the people of Juda, in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, (the same is the first year of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon,)
Ch. 26 ¹ In the beginning of the reign of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, came this word from the Lord, saying:
Ch. 27 ¹ In the beginning of the reign of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, this word came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:
Ch. 28 ¹ And it came to pass in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Sedecias king of Juda, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananias the son of Azur, a prophet of Gabaon spoke to me, in the house of the Lord before the priests, and all the people, saying:
Ch. 29 ¹ Now these are the words of the letter which Jeremias the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the ancients that were carried into captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nabuchodonosor had carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon:
Ch. 30 ¹ This is the word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, saying:
Ch. 31 ¹ At that time, saith the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
Ch. 32 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord in the tenth year of Sedecias king of Juda: the same is the eighteenth year of Nabuchodonosor.
Ch. 33 ¹ And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying:
Ch. 34 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, when Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth, that were under the power of his hand, and all the people fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities thereof, saying:
Ch. 35 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord in the days of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, saying:
Ch. 36 ¹ And it came to pass in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, that this word came to Jeremias by the Lord, saying:
Ch. 37 ¹ Now king Sedecias the son of Josias reigned instead of Jechonias the son of Joakim: whom Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon made king in the land of Juda.
Ch. 38 ¹ Now Saphatias the son of Mathan, and Gedelias the son of Phassur, and Juchal the son of Selemias, and Phassur the son of Melchias heard the words that Jeremias spoke to all the people, saying:
Ch. 39 ¹ In the ninth year of Sedecias king of Juda, in the tenth month, came Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and all his army to Jerusalem, and they besieged it.
Ch. 40 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, after that Nabuzardan the general had let him go from Rama, when he had taken him, being bound with chains, among all them that were carried away from Jerusalem and Juda, and were carried to Babylon.
Ch. 41 ¹ And it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ismahel the son of Nathanias, the son of Elisama of the royal blood, and the nobles of the king, and ten men with him, came to Godolias the son of Ahicam into Masphath: and they ate bread there together in Masphath.
Ch. 42 ¹ Then all the captains of the warriors, and Johanan the son of Caree, and Jezonias, the son of Osaias, and the rest of the people from the least to the greatest came near:
Ch. 43 ¹ And it came to pass, that when Jeremias had made an end of speaking to the people all the words of the Lord their God, for which the Lord their God had sent him to them, all these words:
Ch. 44 ¹ The word that came to Jeremias, concerning all the Jews that dwelt in the land of Egypt, dwelling in Magdal, and in Taphnis, and in Memphis, and in the land of Phatures, saying:
Ch. 45 ¹ The word that Jeremias the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Nerias, when he had written these words in a book, out of the mouth of Jeremias, in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, saying:
Ch. 46 ¹ The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias the prophet against the Gentiles,
Ch. 47 ¹ The word of the Lord that came to Jeremias the prophet against the people of Palestine, before Pharao took Gaza.
Ch. 48 ¹ Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Woe to Nabo, for it is laid waste, and confounded: Cariathaim is taken: the strong city is confounded and hath trembled.
Ch. 49 ¹ Against the children of Ammon. Thus saith the Lord: Hath Israel no sons? or hath he no heir? Why then hath Melchom inherited Gad: and his people dwelt in his cities?
Ch. 50 ¹ The word that the Lord hath spoken against Babylon, and against the land of the Chaldeans in the hand of Jeremias the prophet.
Ch. 51 ¹ Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will raise up as it were a pestilential wind against Babylon and against the inhabitants thereof, who have lifted up their heart against me.
Ch. 52 ¹ Sedecias was one and twenty years old when he began to reign: and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and the name of his mother was Amital, the daughter of Jeremias of Lobna.
